Attaching Files to Posts.... How???

How???

I see a provision to put in a URL link to a hosted file ("URL"), or make a hosted picture show up in a post via a link ("Image"), but nothing that allows the "attachment" of a file that a user has on their hard drive. To allow attachment, you'd need a window that would allow selection of a file that's on something other than a website (a hard drive, a CD-ROM, floppy, etc.).

We used to have this capability. Where'd it go?

On this board indeed... something is missing.

On most forums which support attachment... there is (on the "Add/Edit post" form) a Browse button linked to an HTML file input control, which invokes a standard HTTP POST file upload.

Some forums which I frequent are actually using such a system -- for example those dedicated to model aircraft and aerial photography (many have useful photos, but not everyone have web accounts).

However, allowing such a feature will end up costing server disk space (must put the files somewhere). Perhaps Antony does not have a sufficient supply of said resource.

True, but then just delete the statement:
"You may attach a file to this post while editing."


The limit used to be ~20KB. I wanted to attach a 7KB picture. My desktop PC's firewall will not let me upload pictures to the subdirectory where I need to put it ( http://members.lycos.co.uk/macbreck/photoalbum/ ), but only lets me into the root ( http://members.lycos.co.uk/macbreck/ ). It won't let me move files from the root to the subdir, because it won't display the subdirectory when I'm in upload mode (in WinFTP). Every time I want to upload, I have to go offline on the desktop, startup and connect the notebook PC (which can't use the firewall because it uses Win95 and is a lowly PII 233 with 64MB RAM and 4GB HD), and risk worm attacks on the notebook while I upload from there.
