JMS interview at IGN

Found this:

Spotlight: Babylon 5

Get through two pages of waffle and you get a mini-interview, very nice, including this tit-bit...

IGNFF: What is the future of the B5 universe?

JMS: Wait about a month and you'll find out. The clue is in the opposite of can't.
Does he mean the Cannes festival?????
Its certianly on the 'wrong side of the river', if you mean the channel.

[edited as i forgot the link. fool ]

But the film would have to have been made already. Plus, he said oposite of can't. Will? Can? Must?

Arrrgghhh!

I think it has to be made if it wants to actually enter the prize for best new film, or something.
I think many studios use Cannes to announce new projects. There's nothing to stop them, as far as I am aware. Can anyone clear this up?

The opposite of can't is can. Cannes is i think pronounced 'can' with a slient 'nes', at least by the French. Unless i am mistaken?
I still think it fits, but on the 'arggh', I agree totally :).

[edit] i found this: http://www.bartleby.com/61/96/C0069600.html
Cannes=kan!!
[/edit]

I do believe the "wait about a month" refers to the announcement of WHAT the future of B5 will be (i.e. the project that he cannot talk about). It wouldnt be someting thats already complete yet, as we know in December he was still WRITING it. Its just a heads up for an announcement in Mid-May which he has already told us about. Nothing really new there, but a good article.

Cannes is i think pronounced 'can' with a slient 'nes', at least by the French.
By the French? Well, I think that the "a" is pronounced closer to "ah" or "aw" than the kind of short "a" that English speakers use in "can", and the "n" sound at the end is more clipped and swallowed than the more drawn out "n" that most Americans use in "can". But, yes, the ending "es" or "nes" is silent; and I have hear many Americans Anglicize the pronounciation to something more like the American pronounciation of "can".

Opposite of can't is can. WTF that means (other than a Cannes)?

If Winchester Films rumours are true then maybe it would tie to Cannes festival? If it's a B5 feature, would a British film company announce it in Cannes??

Just my 0.2$.

I'm clueless. Completly clueless.

I'll probably get pounced on for saying this... but...:

Is he still milking this?

I do hope he has a great feature film (or miniseries) announcement sometime in another month or so. But if all his fans keep holding their breath on this, I fear there won't be any living, breathing fans left. ;)

Despite the initials he has given as for the title, I would hope for the telepath war as a movie. If not, eh what the heck. It'll still probably be better than 90% of the television out there.

"The clue is in the opposite of can't" translates as "The clue is in the can." Now, "in the can" is a slang term for "completed and ready for release, as a film or scene of a film" (dictionary.com) so this whole statement reads "the clue is completed and ready for release" - which doesn't help us much - or it reads "the clue is 'completed and ready for release'" - in which case he is referring to something concerning a completed project, which could have something to do with the already-completed B5.

This will all make sense when the truth comes out, but in the meantime I would like to smack "Mr Koshczynski!"

I'm in agreement- it means the film is in the can. The speculation about Cannes is typical JMS- give the fans a couple of different ways to interpret it, and watch the speculation run amok.

If the film is in the can, then it's probably the B5 TV movie dvd set that's bean mentioned a few times. Not really too exciting as the best one of those was In the Beginning, and I've already got it.

Holy crap, people, chill. No sci-fi TV thing will be shown at the Cannes Film Festival. Sheesh.

It just means that something is happening and that we'll probably hear about it in a month.

Help.

I think I understand.

Or Do I ?

Come on Kosh ( sorry - JMS ), give us a break.

'The avalance has already Started. It is too late for the pebbles to vote!'

I think that all of you are missing the point or are misunderstanding the clue. As already stated by other posters, I think that the opposite of can't refers to "in the can". Anyway, I don't think that this means that the project was already shot and therefore is already finished, but simply that it WILL be shot... which means it will definitely me a movie (theatrical or TV) or a (Mini-)Series.

I really can't think of a reason why Warner should announce something B5-related in Cannes...

Yes, that was my immediate impression. Whatever it is it is a DONE DEAL and will go ahead. It's waiting for the right time to be announced. Nothing new here except some additional reassurance that the project is still going forward.

If this turns out to be a TV deal (movie or mini series) we might be watching it as early as late next fall (say november-december) but more probably early next year. If it's a theatrical movie the earliest it might be ready is late next year with spring/summer 2006 a possibility.

(snip)the B5 TV movie dvd set that's bean mentioned a few times. Not really too exciting as the best one of those was In the Beginning, and I've already got it.

I also have the "In The Begining/The Gathering" double DVD, but I would still buy the movie box set, for the commentary that is supposed to be on those two movies, if nothing else.

JMS' commentaries are informative and often hilarious.

I can! (oops! ) - if it is a THATRICAL MOVIE! They are often announced at the Cannes film festival. And BTW, in "Swedish", Cannes is pronounced [kann], with a short, sharp "a", as in scum(?), and I think we do it right! :)

Little did JMS suspect that B5TV.com is also a premier forum for linguistic discourse.

Or did he

I see the 'in the can thing' now. I think it would refer to the deal, as opposed to the actual filming.

Cannes is turning into a big business trade show for the TV and movie industry, its not just a high-culture event. Even the porn industry has an annual get together there. As for Warners and sci-fi at cannes, they actually used it to premier the second Matrix film there last year, so an announcement is feasable.

To be honest, i think i agree with Hypatia, is anyone else tired of the riddles?

Here is some details about the Cannes film Festival.

Cannes Film Festival
Movie enthusiasts wait at the Palais des Festivals (Festival Palace) for the opening of the Cannes Film Festival held each year at the end of May. The largest, most celebrated event along the French Riviera, the festival is also one of the world’s most prestigious film competitions. It draws an international group of directors, actors, and celebrities to the resort town, located in southeast France along the Côte d’ Azur. The Palais, where the festival is held, anchors one end of La Croisette, Cannes’s elegant beach promenade, and at the other end is a harbour filled with luxury yachts from around the world.
Cross word time. Going back to the clue " … look to the wrong side of the river for word …", 'a' is a word. 'River' plus 'a' gives 'Rivera'. Cannes in part of the French Riviera.

Clue in full “Oh...and starting around the Ides of May, look to the wrong side of the river for word from Harry, Jack and Albert”.

Going back to the clue "...look to the wrong side of the river for word ...".
You look with your eye. The 'wrong' spelling of eye is 'i'.
'a' is a word.
So 'i' > 'river' + 'a' giving 'Riviera'.

JMS has built at least two meanings into the same sentence.
