RENT

So, I went to see the film version of RENT today. I saw the stage performance once in New York on Broadway back in 1997, and I've owned the original Broadway cast recording CDs since then as well. But it was nice to see it in a film format.

The changes were few, which was nice. A few songs were omitted, but they weren't ones that impacted the plot much, if at all. It was interesting to see the many sets and locations in the film compared to the sparce stage nondescript one set on the stage. It was also nice to see a couple of people in it that I know from other things. While most of the main cast in the film is the same as the original Broadway cast, I knew that Mimi was recast as Rosario Dawson, who performs the part quite well. I also knew that Joanne had been recast, but I didn't know that Tracie Thoms had been the one to be cast to fill the part. I absolutely love her as Mahandra in Wonderfalls. Also, one of the major speakers during the Life Support meeting in the film was played by the guy who played Marty (aka Naked Guy) in a handful of episodes of Gilmore Girls.

Spoiler Alert

I was a little concerned with a rather major change from the stage production to the film: the death of Angel. I knew some months ago that his death was going to be different, as it'd probably take quite a bit from the producer and studio to have him die right after having an orgasm as he does in the stage production. But the change for the film felt fine and was still crazy sad.

Spoiler End

I went to the first showing today (1:20 pm), and there was a fairly sizable number of people in the theater. I heard a lot of sniffles from people crying, and I even heard some very quiet singing from several people who knew the lyrics (I even accidentally ended up singing very quietly during one song). It was quite worth seeing in the theater.

I was kind of excited to see this, but a close friend of mine was just got a positive HIV result from a test. Dunno if I want to watch this movie just yet. :( I think I would be too sad to.

It is quite sad, but I also find its theme and message of there being no day but today to be quite powerful.

I never had an opportunity to see the play, but I did perform Seasons of Love when I was in choir in highschool. I've listened to other songs from the play, and they're ... uneven. To be honest, I'm not terribly interested in seeing Rent.

I haven't seen the movie yet. I saw the national touring company of Rent when they passed through Detroit abou 3 or 4 years ago.

I just wanted to point out that the songs didn't come off as "uneven" to me when they are in their full context, although I can easily see how that would be the impression if one just heard them as stand-alone songs. Then again, I think that is true of the *vast* majority of musicals ..... at least some songs won't work all *that* well as stand alone songs because they weren't written with any intention of them being heard that way. They are written to serve the whole, add to plot and character development in the context of the overall show.
