Star Trek composer dies

you literally beat me to posting this by a second, very sad news indeed. The Star Trek Voyager theme is one of my favourite scores ever, and he's done some superb work in plenty of other genres.

One of the greatest film composers of all time is gone. His passion, his vision, the moving and touching notes of his life that caused hearts to soar and tears to fall will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

I remember watching his interviews on a lot of the Trek DVDs -- he was really interesting to listen to. It's good to know his son is following in his footsteps.

Besides Trek, his music was essential in the setting the neavau-noir tone of LA Confidential, the intensity of the Alien films, the glamour of the Academy Award shows, and provided backdrops for comedies like Fierce Creatures. From Rambo to Total Recall, his musical stamp is everywhere in popular cinema, and he never retired. Music students will tell you how scoring to action is its own art and incredibly demanding.

I'll avoid the hyperbole and just say his contribution to TV and films was immense and memorable, and it's a great shame he's gone.

He did a lot of movies, and a lot of his themes had a similar ring to them. For example he did the theme for "Air Force One" which was very reminicent of "Star Trek: First Contact." I always thought he was one of the best movie composers in the business.

BTW he did the Star Trek THE NEXT GENERATION theme, not the original series. The Star Trek theme was done by Alexander Courage.

How sad. His music made "Hoosiers" one of my favorite all-time movies, and makes my heart swell. Same for ST: First Contact. :(

The Next Generation Theme was lifted from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Goldsmith did have a tendency to "phone-in" some of his soundtracks and they were remarkably similar to others in his catalog (such as Air Force One, the Rambo series, the TNG films, and Total Recall), but he would also surprise us with experimental soundtracks (Planet of the Apes, Alien, and Poltergeist) that were very different.

Yea thats right. I always used to bug people who would say the TNG theme was cool, and I would be like "dude, thats from The Motion Picture"

Yea some stuff was similar, but you are right, he had a lot of VERY different themes on his resume.
