the views in the show weren't connected to anyone on the show, that was the whole point. it was one big joke that amounted to "how stupid must you be to actually believe this shit."

In real life yes .In terms of the characters they portray and the story no . When i said " it was an interesting look into society [yadda yadda] " i was referring more to the language (slurs that i wont repeat anywhere) that they used and how it wold not be allowed on tv these days ... But on the other hand i suppose these " slurs" allows beliefs/views and opinions to surface .

Not only is Warren Mitchell Jewish in real life (as youpointed out), but one of the underlying gags of the series was that his character was also infact Jewish.

The point was that it highlights the ignorance of complete plebs and cretins such as Nick Griffin and the BNP who drone on and on about who is British ad infinitum... yet very often they have a shared heritage with the groups they hate.

Warren Mitchell often recounts stories of completely stupid skinheads (who all need deporting), who walk up tohim andsay how "Alf was right" without realising that "Alf" is merely a mirror held up to their own brand of evil.

i have no idea but i remember last time we played your mob, i was in the pub and the english started booing the flower of scotland, so i booed god save the queen, i can tell you i had to get out of there pretty fucking sharpish.

I think you would have appreciated an incident in a local pub here a few years ago.

England were playing Poland and about halfway into the match, several tall, bulky skinheads came in to the pub and sat in the corner. England were leading 1-0.

Suddenly Poland equalized and the lads in the corner all got up to cheer.

There were about three other people in the pub and they all started to get twitchy and outraged... course it turns out the men in the corner were all Polish immigrants. I just found it really funny that because we were in a rural town... they outnumbered us. It didn't bother me at all.

Hate mindless racist thugs.

it's funny i go to a little rural pub every year for the calcutta cup, and although i am always the only jock in the boozer, everybody is really nice, even last year when we won and me and my best mate went on a celebratory bender. and although rugger does tend to foster a fraternal spirit i do still hope you chaps lose at the weekend (simply because you didn't deserve to qualify as you have been bloody awful.

As for Alf a lot of people misunderstood him I think.I suppose some people just see what they want to see.Was definately one of the great comedians.

I watched This is England the other week,about a lad that befriends a bunch of skinheads.Was quite a good film showing how racism got into the skinhead culture.I used to love the skinhead scene as a kid,due mainly to my love of ska and two tone music.

i do remember after the first leg of the 99 playoff for euro 2000 the guy who runs the post office down the road from my uncle back home in inverness was stabbed to death. his crime? being an englishman and england winning 2-0, fucking paul scholes.
