The Prisonor did not have an ending so they tacked one on.

Not according to Patrick McGoohan. He's often said that the ending was just what he had envisioned at the start.

(Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that it makes any sense... )

The executives at ATV claim that they had to add the ending. They probably ripped off a James Bond movie.

As for the Zen Maths 6 = 1, 1 = 1 and 1 = none; that will have come from Patrick McGoohan. It may have even been in the original plan, although I would have expected some for shadowing of the face in the gorilla suit.
