Politics is an ugly, evil, cynical business. For instance, who would believe that a US Senator could drive a car off a bridge, have a female passenger drown in the accident, and face no direct consequences?
A winning smile, passionate rhetoric, and a nice haircut usually beats intelligence, integrity, maturity, hard work, and honesty. Just because Mages have great powers dosen't mean they can't be bamboozled, charmed, placated, etc.
