Well, I'm up at 7:00 am watching Crusade. I've never seen the first six eps. I'll let you know what I think...

Well, enjoy.

I watched half of "Racing the Night" before heading for work. By the time I get home, there'll be nothing left but "Appearances and Other Deceits" and "Warzone".

Taking a quick break from the marathon. *cough*

I'm liking Crusade so far, this is my first time to see it. I did, however, see Visitors from Down the Street in its first run. It's the only thing in the B5 universe I can't bear to watch again.

I, um, kinda took the day off work to make sure that I could get the whole thing properly on tape.

Fortunately, I'm really congested, so if anyone calls, it at least sounds convincing. (In other words, I SHOULD have called in sick today because I WAS sick, but that wasn't WHY I called in sick.

Now, if only the B5LR trailer would download properly..

Man, I wish i was organised enough to label my tapes. I know i've got half the series recorded somewhere I just wish i could find them!

Re: Crusade (at least I know I\'m in the right forum)

Yeah, I agree on "Visitors.."

Some people really like this ep for its parodying the "X-Flies".

However, I like my parody a little more subtle. A sly reference or an in-joke is about the extent of what I'd expect, not an entire episode devoted to it. There's no need to hit us over the head.

Plus, it seemed inappropriate to me that they should be filming such a distractingly goofy episode in their first 5. "Vistors.." is the kind of filler ep you'd expect somewhere in a much later season when the show is established and they can get away with more experimental eps.

Well, the fact that they filmed it early doesn't mean they planned to air it as one of the first five. "Chrysalis", the S1 cliff-hanger, was filmed about half-way through the first season because they knew they'd need more post-production time on it.

One of the ways both B5 and Crusade stayed on budget (something only possible because of their pre-planned nature) was by shooting episodes in the most efficient order. If two shows ten episodes apart in the story both required the same expensive set, or both featured the same expensive guest star, they could shoot them back-to-back and save money.

"Visitors" may have been planned to air later in S1. When they shot it no one was expecting the sets and uniforms to change, and certainly no one had any reason to think that the series would be cut-off after 13 episodes.

Joe

Re: Crusade (at least I know I\'m in the right forum)

Incidentally, why does the new continuity-based episode order place Warzone as the penultimate episode? It may be a rather weak opening episode, but it's still chronologically the first thing to happen, so surely it should be the first to be shown?

Either that or miss it out altogether. It's new placement really doesn't seem to fit.

Re: Crusade (at least I know I\'m in the right forum)

My understanding is that JMS disliked the episode, so he stuck it in the end when he was allowed to choose his own airing order. I guess he didn't want that episode to be the first thing people saw, who hadn't seen it when it originally aired.

In terms of story, I don't remember the eps well enough, but I think it can work by putting War Zone at the end and still make sense. Actually, I think you're gonna find problems with the story continuity no matter which order you watch it.

I for one hope that if they do bring the show back, they re-film some or all of the eps or at least put new ones in between the old ones to fix it up. One of the great things about B5 is that the damn story made sense.

Re: Crusade (at least I know I\'m in the right forum)

I know I'll be crucified for saying this, but Crusade was never my cup of tea. I can't really pinpoint it, but it just didn't connect with me the way B5 did. I don't know if jms put all his effort into the work, because the emotions which were in b5 I couldn't feel in Crusade. I know it only lasted 13 eps and I do believe it had potential (the rest of the season seemed to pick up a bit from what I've read) but I just never got connected. I'll watch it again, and see some of the eps I missed, but I don't think it will change my mind. It was a good idea, and I do believe TNT fu@#ed it up. I wish I it could have seen its full run and then I really could have compared the two, but I doubt it would have stood up to the original.

Well, I for one really enjoyed Crusade.

After five years of angst on B5, I found Crusade to be fun and very likeable.

Compared to the first 13 episodes of B5, I think Crusade at least equals the quality, if it doesn't beat them.

It's a shame that all that happened with TNT, I would have really liked to see the show continue.

The opening credits for Cursade are simply a work of art. Great audio/video editing, excellent typography... *drool* Those first few seconds of the show are incredible.

Re: Crusade (at least I know I\'m in the right forum)

Maybe I'm just used to it by now, but I thought the Evan Chen score was pretty good. A couple of times it got a little drum-heavy for me, but otherwise it wasn't bad.

Of course, there are a few problems with the episode order, and a few dangling questions.

Like, what was Lochley doing stranded in a Star Fury? How did that happen? Why was she unescorted?

And if Excalibur picked her up in that episode, how is it that Lochley and Gideon hadn't met yet several episodes later? I'll leave the uniform stuff alone...

Other than that, these were some pretty cool stories!

I agree! I loved the credits for Crusade. They're just great. Chen did a great job, and I think most of the dislike for his music is unjustified. But then again, music is a subjective thing.

I think I'm going to go watch them again...

And yes, I felt the stories were good. What I really enjoyed was that we got to see new, different places. The dead worlds with the cities were great, something I'd like to see a lot more of.

I really hope Crusade comes back, it's just wrong not having the story completed. Just in these 13 episodes, a little over half of what would have been season 1, we got plenty of mysteries. The Apocalypse Box, the Shadow ship (which I think was discussed about in the Technomages books, but I'm not sure).

Bring back Crusade!

Re: Crusade (at least I know I\'m in the right forum)

With me, I didn't think I was going to like it. I'd read the blurb, seen the publicity shots, thought it looked kind of dull. When I knew it was only going to last 13 eps, I wondered whether it was worth bothering with.

I'm really glad I did. The show grabbed me almost straight away. I loved Gideon, Galen and Dureena, and their relationship. You could see pretty early the threads that JMS was setting up to get more important later on, and I just wanted there to be so much more than there actually was.

I'll be the first to admit that the show didn't always work. There were some dull eps, and some silly eps and the continuity was shot to hell, but I know I'd sooner see flawed geious on my screen that offensive banality, and I feel this series can count itself part of the former rather than the latter (After all this is JMS we're talking about!)

Re: Crusade (at least I know I\'m in the right forum)

Yesterday was my first time to watch any Crusade at all..
I think the music and the CG were great but I didn't like Galen talking during the opening credits at all... "Who do you serve and who do you trust" doesnt make much sense and just seems hes trying to sound mystical and Kosh-like.
After watching a few of the eps, my wife pointed out that Gideon was Bill Lumbergh from "Office Space." I DIED laughing! To see Gideon standing there with his coffee cup, making the Lumbergh face like he did in the movie is just hilarious.
I was also kind of worried that they might be over-using techno mages. Techno mages are really cool, powerful and a great idea, but I wouldn't want them beaten into the ground like Voyager did with the Borg.
Plus, the Xfiles episode was just too stupid!

Despite my nitpickings, I thought it was enjoyable, but lacked the epic feel that B5 had.

Re: Crusade (at least I know I\'m in the right forum)

Well, now I have seen all thirteen episodes twice.

I think that the episodes are better the second time around.

During the closing credits of credits of episode two, it struck me how much I like Chen's music for Crusade. My initial reception had been lukewarm.

Nope. That pair of questions is supposed to become Very Important during the Second Season, if the show ever gets restarted.

There are hints and foreshadowing: The episode with the cyber-enhanced soldiears who were infected with the virus by the Earthforce general trying to get them back in Jail so he can cover his ass because the secret project that Created the cypernetic implants was ILLEGAL. IOW, if these guys ever get a chance to talk, his Butt goes to Jail.

So, should Gideon ever Trust this guy? After all, he outranks Gideon.

The Senator who came aboard with the guy who wanted to go home to get Married.
Would YOU Trust him?

The people from the Earthforce Political Office??
That office was Created by Clark! Why does it still exist??
And some of the people in it were Clark's toadies.
Why aren't they in Jail?
Who do They Serve?

Who do You Serve? And Who do You Trust?

Central questions for the Future of Earth.
