In the US, the Philips DVD727 is available at Target Stores, and Sears. I saw it on sale at Sears for $69, after paying $79 at Target. It is progressive scan, converts PAL to NTSC, and vice versa, and can be set to output, PAL, NTSC, or pass through. It can easily be hacked to be made region-free, using the remote. We have been using it at the Film Festival I work on for a couple of months now, and it works fine. Kribu was kind enough to link me to a site with region-free hacks for DVD players. it is:

Also, I have read, with no details, that US HDTVs can play PAL just fine, without conversion. Of course, they are digital. Does anyone know if that is true?
