Having the dog on board reminded me of a scifi short story I read many years ago. A ship was returning to Earth from a long mission, and they were required to do an inventory to reconcile what they left with with what they returned with, before they could take leave. On the inventory they left with was an entry, off. og. After consulting with all of the crew, no one could figure out what that was. So, the Captain, inorder to reconcile things, wrote that the "off. og" broke up on reentry. Turned out that "off. og" was a typo, it should be off. (official) DOG, so the fact that the dog broke up on reentry caused a major investigation!

But they really do keep leaning on sex to generate interest, don't they? To an extent I would have though impossible for Star Trek.

Oh, I don't know about that. Even on TOS all the crew women were dressed in those skimpy uniforms, and practically all of the guest females were intentionally dressed so that it looked like the slightest nudge would cause some piece of clothing to fall off.

One thing that I don't like about any of the Treks is that all of the women are slender and pretty. One of the things I really liked about B5 is that they actually had "pudgy" women, at least I remember one or two on Garibaldi's security team looking that way. :D

They never had women in heat or these steamy decontamination scenes, though. Leave a bit to the imagination, I think. :rolleyes:

As far as B5 casting goes, I'd say the same is true for the men, as well. Everyone didn't have to look like a model in that show, and it did add to how it felt "real" I think. Not to mention it allowed some older and perhaps some less-traditional looking actors to put in some fine performances.

Actually, much of the B5 cast was older, and that was crucial to the "feel" and themes of the show. Londo, especially, had to me a middle-aged man. But even the security chief, a role that may be tempting to be filled with a tough-but-sexy hero man type was portrayed by a balding dude. Still, even Ivanova was way prettier than I would think someone in her position to be, and how convenient that when Delenn underwent a bizarre alien transformation, she popped out looking gorgeous.

It's entertainment, folks, and it will always be full of The Beautiful People. I'm not complaining, but Enterprise sometimes does a get a little stupid with it. I don't think it's nearly as bad as some of you make it out to be. It still beats the writing and story of the show.

I don't mind gratuitous sex (big surprise, huh?), I just prefer it when they do it well. Enterprise can't even get that right. I've seen real porn that is more sincere than those decontamination scenes.

I was actually thinking mostly of the guest-stars on B5. I haven't itemized it or anything,but it seems to me that a good number of them looked like "regular" people to me. More so than on many shows.

The funny thing about the latest Enterprise I saw (last week's, not tonight's episode which will not show here for another 4.15 hours) is that the acting was actually good. I do think they are leaning on cheap tease kind of sexual innuendo far too much for what was once a show of ideas and characters and passions (that went beyond titillating the viewing audience).

I would not have complained nearly as much about Voyager if I'd seen into the future with Enterprise. But, to be fair, maybe there was some excellent episode I missed by basically coming in from my night lecture and not watching it as it played in the other room. I did watch last week's ep from start to finish, though, and found it alright in places and kind of sad in other places.

I watched the season finaly to see if they actually were going to try to change direction.

Felt it was touch and go but by the end I think they able to pull it out of a nose dive.

Well, yes. Sexuality is obviously one of the crucial characteristics of humanity (arguable the single most potent and dynamic elements of the human experience). It must be dealt with in art and entertainment. Unfortunately, it is almost always ignored in science fiction, and that includes Start Trek and Babylon 5.

In both series, the characters are so puritanical and stilted sexually that it makes me skeptical and unsympathetic. Interestingly enough, the biggest exception is Kirk, which was shown in the 60s. So much for the idea that sexuality has gotten more pronounced on TV over the years. In fact, it is my belief that sexuality has been decreased while titilation has been increased.

And that's why the T'Pol crap is so lame. It isn't about sexuality, it's about titillation and cheap jokes.

Unfortunately, mainstream film and TV are not the places to go to seek mature, interesting takes on sexuality.


The acting on Enterprise is improved. Archer started out awkward and annoying, but Bakula has settled into the character, pulling off the intensity when needed and bringing in some of the charm from his Quantum Leap days.

I watched the season finale and I am looking forward to the coming season.This coming from someone who has not watched the show in quite some time .

Well, maybe there is hope for me and Enterprise after all. I have been wrapped up a bit with a workshop that I needed to attend to get a major projet of mine off the ground for this summer. But I suspect I'll watch the season finale by the end of the weekend.

I hope it does show new promise for the series. It's the only thing I've taped on my vcr this week, I think.

I must be one of the only major B5 fans that love Enterprise. Don't hurt me, but I like it more than B5.
