Firefly Movie (More rumors and speculation)

The train job has come and gone... Well anyway, here in Finland I've seen two of the episodes. So there supposed to be the two hour pilot also? Oh, that's nice. I didn't manage to see that here... I'll think I have to dl it from someone later on. Firefly seems to be quite rational series, its just doesn't feel good when you watch it and you know "yeah, like this was cancelled, so why am I bothering...". But I'll give this series a chance. Hope to see the movie also. :p

Universal pictures has added "Serenity" to their list of upcoming movies on their website. From what I understand that is also the working title of the movie and of course the name of the ship. The movie company has already registered the domain name Serenitymovie.com as well. Looks like things are gearing up for a movie, but you know how quickly these things can fall apart, but I'm hopeful.

Well first off, this is a very good thing. The two most unpleasantly early killed series for me have been Crusade and Firefly.

I wish SOMEONE could have at least picked up the series and continued it......but now it seems Fox wasn't done milking the concept..........in their brilliance they must have decided it was more suited to a movie franchise than a tv series. Maybe they see a Star Trek like revival of the tv series concept via movie success.

The one thing I just can't let go of is the cool similarities Firefly had to one of my fav Japanese animes, Outlaw Star. Heh, and now the movie title is the name of the ship. I love it. If the only way they can get some of the great Anime stories and concepts into the US mainstream market is to cloak them and mix them up a bit, than I'm all for it. Great writing always has to borrow from somewhere, might as well be from the gems of other cultures. Ideas are rarely totally original and it is good to use great ideas from lots of cultures, not just recycle American plot devices.

It's a pity the Crusade model was not a bit better suited to more episodic movie releases...............but then that was what made it so promising as a tv series.

Actually, SERENITY was produced by Universal, not Fox. Fox no longer wanted the property, so Whedon shopped it around until he got a studio to back it...enter Universal.

If JMS did the same can of pushing and shopping then a B5 feature would most likely be a reality as well, although WB doesn't want to sell B5, JMS just has the rights to a film, slightly different situation admittedly. That and WB has never really been science fiction friendly like Universal and the other studios.

Not only is SERENITY finished, Whedon also has a deal for two more films in the FIREFLY universe.

It is this kind of deal making that I wish JMS would do with B5.

Really? I hadn't heard about the two additional films... personally I was hoping for a renewed TV show, but I'll take movies, too!

KF:

There was a note from Whedon somewhere, where he said that if the movie did well, it wuold end up being a Trilogy.

There was also something mentioned by Nathan Fillion (Mal) at a convention. There were rumors that if the movie did well, the series would come back. At the time he completely dismissed that possibility, stating that the agreement that was made with Fox in order to allow it to be made into a movie was that it COULD NOT return as a series.

So sounds like no series no matter what, but possibly 2 more movies. Unless things have changed since then...

That sounds like the same deal I've heard about. Whedon really pushed for this deal. Which is why we have one FIREFLY film with the possibility of two more on the way, and no B5 film...since JMS isn't pushing like Whedon did to get one made.

Well, a TV show would have allowed them to cover more ground... but I'm definitely cool with movie trilogies, too.
