Great Enterprise news

Ah, yes, Mike G did post a link.

Thanks. :)

I admit: I'll check out Enterprise again if one fo the guest stars interest me. Spiner definitely would liven things up a bit, I think. :D

My goodness. Right when I decide to write off "Enterprise" I keep hearing news that makes me think I'll have to check it out next season. :D

From scifi.com:
Manny Coto, co-executive producer of UPN's Star Trek: Enterprise, told SCI FI Wire that as one of the show's new head writers, he wants the show to link up more with the original Star Trek series and its subsequent series. "I'm a fan of the ... original [Star] Trek," Coto said in an interview at UPN's fall press tour in Los Angeles. "And season four for me is going to be everything I, as an old Star Trek fan, would want to see on Enterprise, Which is basically a lot of touchstones connecting Enterprise with the old series and with the Next Generation series."

For Coto, that in part means incorporating more of the original series' aliens, such as the green-skinned Orions from "Shadowplay," as well as the more familiar Andorians and Vulcans. "A lot of people have noticed that the Vulcans on Enterprise don't behave like the Vulcans from the Kirk era and/or the Next Generation era," Coto said. "The Vulcans on Enterprise are more impulsive. They actually are somewhat more emotional. They lie. They don't have the same kind of values that the Vulcans that we know of."

To bridge the gap, Coto envisions a story arc in which a revolutionary Vulcan—Coto calls him a "Lawrence of Arabia" of Vulcan—proclaims that Vulcans have strayed from the teachings of Surak, the legendary Vulcan who ushered in the Time of Awakening and founded the movement based on logic and peace. "And this character will lead a revolution on Vulcan, which will bring Vulcan and Vulcan ideals to where we know them in the later series," Coto said. "And Enterprise will get involved in this." As a result of this resurgence, the political situation with the Andorians changes, and mysterious dissidents on the planet Vulcan attempt to stir up a civil war (and will later be revealed to have been Romulans in disguise), he added. "That's an example of the kinds of stories that we're going to tell this season," Coto said.

Star Trek: Enterprise returns to UPN on Oct. 8 in its new 8 p.m. ET/PT Friday timeslot

You know, the idea of a bit of a Vulcan political crisis appeals to me.

This sounds interesting. Granted we've heard nothing of this historical Vulcan figure in later incarnations...but that alone I'm not adverse to...it's doing it in such a way that it doesn't fit. If they write it so that it does flow and is buyable...maybe even involves a figure we have heard of...then I'm fine with it. As to the Romulan thing...this is all supposed to be around the time of the Romulan war.

Now the next question is: Will the writing be interesting, the characters be turned into people I can give a shit about, and will there be long lasting consequences...and will I be moved and drawn in?

The Vulcan conspiracy/near civil war/human issue/Romulan spies thing is actually touched on in the ST novel Federation...so it could well fit...and YAY! he's trying to tie threads...he actually used the word thread...this could be a good sign. I will hold onto a bit of very reserved optimism.

Only time will tell...but at least he's loyal to the OC...which B&B aren't...that alone is a good thing.

Sounds good stuff. :)

I think TPTB have gotten a little worried that it seemed Manny was taking over the show, protesting that they'd still be around. :D But normally only exec producers talk about guiding the show like this.

I haven't watched Enterprise since the middle of the second season, until I saw an episode last night. It had the Andorians in it, as well as some aliens I've never heard from or seen before. I still wasn't impressed. I give them props for some of the ideas they have for the coming season, but I think it's still a little too late (for me anyway).

I also keep hearing talk about bringing in former Trek cast members. I heard one about Shatner playing his own great-great-great-great grandfather, and a similar one with Spiner playing Dr. Soongs' great-great something or other. I just don't see the appeal in former members even wanting to come back to play that type of role, in essence just rehashing their old characters.

I can't blame the actors for the show; I always kind of liked them. I just couldn't stand the storylines and the breaking of what used to be continuity in the Trek universe. I may tune into an episode or two next season, but we'll see.

Unfortunately, Sinclair...your feelings are echoed everywhere. This may be too little too late. And like I said...will it be done well...with great character developement...consequences...and will it link everything together in such a way that makes one say..."Fuck! That makes perfect sense! That was awesome!" Unlike what it's been doing where most fans say, "WTF!? No WAY! That was SO FUCKING STUPID! That just blew! And blew continuity to hell...again!"

:D

Sooo...do we do more of the later? Or welcome the former? And will I finally give a shit about any of them? Like I said, very, very cautiously I will tune in with little expectation.

And Antony...I'm not sure I understood your post. If anything, this would (at least on the surface) seem to indicate that B&B are possibly only figureheads now...and Coto is actually much more in charge than the EP/show runner position he's been publically labeled as having. But I never underestimate B&B's ability to throw their egos around when it is least convenient or wanted.

All I know is that it sounded like good news to me. I have no idea when the new season will start, but I'm sure someone around these parts will let me know. :D

Same with the big JMS announcement. I have a feeling I'll hear about it. :D

Yea, math instructor. I was told by a psychology professor once "you math majors are in your own little world sometimes".

I didn't deny it. :D

Pulling this thread back to life, Trekweb has a great interview with Many Cotto, in two parts:
part 1 and part 2.

Sounds like he's got some cool things in store... May even tempt me back to Trek.

Thanks for the links...great news it seems. Perhaps there is still hope for the franchise B&B killed. MC seems to have a deep passion for the lore and history and continuity, which is what ST needs. He also has a long time love for TOS and ST in general and a vision...the other things I've said it needs.

Now, if he lives up to the hype he's putting out there and if B&B keep their unimiginative little pug-noses out of things, then I have some reserved optimism for ENT. and ST overall.

I will, once again, give it a chance. But if I starts to get dumb-ass stories and overt melodrama and more of the same old schtick, then it's lights out for me.

But he's got me intrigued...we'll see.

Thanks for the links Darth. It looks like Manny definately has a good plan for this next season. I really like the fact that he himself is a fan --- he seems to know a LOT about Trek history --- and is wanting to make a show that the fans would like. B&B always tried to ignore the past and forget it, and make things newer and better. I am actually looking forward to this season of Enterprise, and will make sure the TiVo is ready to grab them.

I agree with what the guy on Trekweb said. This is the first time in a long time I can remember looking forward to a new season of anything Trek.

Creation of the Federation.

Possible base stories for that.
The East India Company consolidated India, Burma and Pakistan.
Bismarck joined the German countries together.
The USA is not a good example since the initial members were all ex-British colonies; although the Southern and Western states may have a few stories.
The UN is a failure.
The Common Market was done voluntary - that could form a basis.

Colonyearth,

I think we might need to see this daft story out first, then let Manny begin. :)
