Hello

Dylan,

You did an excellent job. After only two hours, Martel became one of my favourite starship captains. I wish you good luck in your future endeavors.

Admiral Dave

Ditto what Dave said. /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

Best wishes to you Dylan! I hope to see you aound someplace. /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif

Never. /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

You were not the only one, either. Many hetero-gals here really fell for him in that character.

It is fortunate that he is popular enough (we hope) to get another great roll somewhere. It's just too bad it was not here with JMS on this great project. /ubbthreads/images/icons/frown.gif

Yup, I fell for Martel hook, line, and sinker. When people say "Kirk or Picard?" I'll look at them, narrow my eyes, laugh, and say:

"Martel!"

(And, Dylan, all you have to do is smile to slay some of us right where we're standing! /ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif )

No offense to Dylan, but Kirk was the man. Period. We just haven't seen remotely enough of David Martel to make a judgement on him being in the same class as Kirk, or Picard for that matter.

Maybe we should take Picard out of there. Picard doesn't belong. Picard's really an entirely different character.

Ok. Ok. I'm biased. I'm really not that much of a Trekker. /ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

Kirk vs. Martel.

Martel.

Recoil, you know you can't argue with me. /ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

You can never argue with someone who has blinders bolted to the side of their heads. /ubbthreads/images/icons/tongue.gif

Yes, I know you are biased. Which is why I posted the comment in the first place./ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif

I'll side with Channe on this one. /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

Even though I liked Kirk and the old Star Trek, I like anything B5 much better. /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif

Blinders? Pah! You're just as bad as I am.

Dude, if Rangers was going to be as good as some of the stuff I've been seeing on Jeremiah, then Kirk would have just eaten Martel's dust...

Heh. Wasnt looking for a debate, just to get you riled up. I see it worked. /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif

You still cant compare the two. In all honesty most of Kirks character was developed away from the TV Screen, somewhat in the movies, mostly in books (especially Shatner's books). TV, storytelling, and character building have come a long way in the last 35 years.

They are in two completely different eras, you have to appreaciate each for what they were, in their own timeframe, or not at all.

For the record I think B5 is by far a better series, and a better story, but TOS and TNG have a different kind of appeal. To me it is like comparing apples and oranges. They are so different it isnt even funny. Both of great quality, but very different in content and especially delivery.

But you are extremely biased when dealing with Rangers. I cant say as I blame you and it more than likely has to do with actual interaction of the cast members here, which is understandable. That was what I meant with the blinders comment. /ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

Maybe not Kirk, but Martel definitely beats Archer. And Janeway.

Admiral Dave

Janeway could have been a really great character. We feminists had such hope at the beginning of Voyager.

Unfortunately, as soon as the Boys' Club started writing her, she immediately became not "Captain," but "Captain, As Long As Chakotay Approves," among other things that she, as a captain, should not have been.

I got so sick of it.

Captain as long as Chakotay approves? Are you bloody joking? Chakotay was the dishrag! They didn't even tell him things! Tom Paris was more informed than Chakotay!
But seriously, Janeway, not a good captain.
I know people wanted to see fallibility, but hey, Picard and Kirk were fallible, but they weren't screw-ups like Janeway. Archer is a bit of a screw-up too, but I don't know yet how Enterprise is gonna go, haven't seen enough to tell.
Herc actually impressed me as the cap of the Andromeda, and while I kinda despised Hercules as a show, I've gained respect for Sorbo through Andromeda.

As for B5LR, well, the corporate bloodsucking leeches that were being discussed in another thread decided NOT to show it in .ca although the damn thing was made here, so I never got to see it.

Once this arc with the temporal war really gets going on Enterprise, I think Archer is gonna grow some stones. He seems like a guy who's Picardish up to a point, but he's got a low boiling point and I can't wait to see someone light a fire under him. /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif

As for Kevin Sorbo, I kinda liked the Hercules series, but it was a bit too over-the-top for me. Seeing grown men like Michael Hurst dancing around like 10 year olds (not Sorbo, mind you) just made me squirm. I DID enjoy Xena: Warrior Princess immensely and was very saddened to hear of Kevin Smith's (Ares) death in February.

Sorbo in Andromeda has really impressed me. It's quite a different role for him, and that show has really taken off. But then, it's a Roddenberry show. /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif It's got a really nice arc going, and I look forward to it every week.

I also like that new Mutant X show. Victoria Pratt (Shalomar) makes me feel warm & fuzzy /ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif

Agreed. Janeway being a female captain was a wise move on Paramounts part, but they failed in the attempt IMO. Just goes to show you that not everyone can write good for female roles. This is one of the reasons I LOVE B5. Not just strong female characters, but believable ones. Lots of shows try to have the tough female leadership figure, but they just dont seem to get it right. JMS certainly did in B5, and I am sure we would have seen a solid Sarah Cantrel and Firell as well.

I do think Martel would have shined as well, and have ranked up there with the all-time sci-fi captains (a short list imo). Its just a shame we dont have the chance at the moment to see what he was made of. With some luck, perhaps someday we will get a chance to see.

SAG?
It's 10:30 and I'm just getting ready to go to sleep, so I really can't be bothered with figuring it out /ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif
