Re: How many of IMDB\'s Top 50 SF movies have you s

Well, PsionTen, we are tied. I have seen 46 as well. I have not seen Matrix Reloaded yet, so I guess I should pop out and see it to claim the lead. I also have not seen Abre Los Ojos, or Equilibrium, but from the IMDb descriptions, I would like to. I have seen enough of Akira on cable to know that I don't care to see the rest of it.

I guess that all of those films at least squeak by as scifi, but I don't agree with the order, but this is by popular vote, not by critics.

Re: How many of IMDB\'s Top 50 SF movies have you s

When I started this I briefly thought of doing full-blown statistics on the results, but now I see that they would be way too much work. Some highlights though:

Average # of movies seen so far is just over 29. Most of us have seen more than half of these movies.

There are just three movies that everyone has seen, and they're the three original Star Wars movies. So make a Star Wars reference on this board, and everyone should know what you're talking about.

Every movie on the list has been seen by at least two of us. Movies that *only* two of us have seen:

Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes)
Delicatessen
Cité des enfants perdus, La (The City of Lost Children)
Equilibrium

I'm one of the two people who's seen Open Your Eyes and City of Lost Children. You guys should go out and rent those movies! They're good! (For those who like Terry Gilliam, CoLC is something that I bet you'd like.)

On the flip side, it looks like the original Planet of the Apes might be the most widely seen one on the list that I haven't seen. I need to watch that one of these days. Would also like to watch Seconds, as JMS once mentioned that it's one of his favorite movies. The problem is finding a video store that has it....

Re: How many of IMDB\'s Top 50 SF movies have you s

Seconds often plays on cable, it has been on the Sundance Channel, and TCM. City of Lost Children is playing now on premium cable, maybe Cinemax, I just saw it listed, but not sure where. I will try to find Open Your Eyes and Equilibrium to rent, as they both sound good. I like Terry Gilliam enough that I consider Twelve Monkeys one of the best Scifi films ever made, certainly in the top five. 12M was based on an experimental French film called La Jetee, which is currently playing on Sundance.

To correct my previous post, some of those films AREN'T scifi. I.E. Lost Horizon. I love it, but it has no science fiction element to it, it is based on mysticism. Films like Dr. Strangelove, and On The Beach, while they have science, and are fictional, aren't really science fiction, as they contain nothing that we don't know to be true in physical terms. Merely setting a story in the near future, with no additional elements that aren't present today, doesn't really make it SCIENCE fiction in my book. The best scifi film that I can think of off hand that wasn't on the list is an Argentine film called Man Facing Southwest. Very subtle, almost no special effects, but qualifies as scifi, since one character was an alien. Oh, and Dark Star should have been on there. I love The Man In The White Suit with Alec Guiness, but I wouldn't list it as scifi, even though it is on a technicallity.

Re: How many of IMDB\'s Top 50 SF movies have you seen?

Okay, I haven't seen the following:

6 Metropolis (1927)
9 Donnie Darko (2001)
12 Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
17 Brazil (1985)
19 Frankenstein (1931)
24 Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
26 Abre los ojos (Open Your Eyes) (1997)
29 Fail-Safe (1964)
30 Lost Horizon (1937)
32 Delicatessen (1991)
36 Cité des enfants perdus, La (The City of Lost Children)(1995)
38 Equilibrium (2002)
39 Incredible Shrinking Man, The (1957)
40 Thing From Another World, The (1951)
41 Night of the Living Dead (1968)
45 Seconds (1966)
46 Dawn of the Dead (1978)
48 Man in the White Suit, The (1951)
49 Dark City (1998)

So that means I've seen 31 of the top 50. I too have been very impressed with IMDB's listings, however, I just had to point out that:
1 Godfather, The (1972) 9.0/10 (72603 votes)
2 Shawshank Redemption, The (1994) 8.9/10 (92136 votes)
3 Godfather: Part II, The (1974) 8.8/10 (40901 votes)
is almost beyond forgiveness. How can ANYONE, and I really mean ANYONE here, put "The Godfather" above "The Godfather: Part II"?

It's like a crime.

Okay, okay, so it's based on votes, that makes sense, since I do know many people who have seen part 1 but not part 2. None-the-less, it's a shame.

Because it's a tighter narrative and is closer to the spirit of the novel. Its smaller scope intensifies the familial aspect of the saga, arguably its most important element.

Re: How many of IMDB\'s Top 50 SF movies have you seen?

For me it is quite simple. If it involves speculative science and / or technology then it is science fiction, regrdless of what other genre it may also be.

You've just described what is called "speculative fiction" - a genre term used for fiction that isn't based entirely in reality, but also doesn't fit into scifi or fantasy. Writers like Heinlein and King fit in this category.
