Is the B5 Universe dying or just taking nap?

B5 is alive. <img src="images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
And when they come to take it from me, Ill being waiting with Mr clicky-bat. (Dont suppose anyone else grew up reading their dads Steve Bell compilations.)

Don't worry Lyta, I'm sure we'll all buy the Jeremiah DVD's through your site when they come out

Haha, I only have to wait a few more years is all. :p

It's okay really. I mean I would love more S2 sales on my site but I have many other things that do sell so I can't complain too much. :D I just wish this quarter wasn't so pitiful in sales. I made more money through Amazon UK than Amazon.com this quarter if that tells you anything. ;)

If it helps, I will buy the s2 UK dvds through your site, Lyta. Got season 1 through Antony, so i guess its fair ;)

Just be sure to add the link as soon as amazonuk has the pre-order page up :)

You bet I will as soon as I hear about it. :)

Hmm, that reminds me that I should enable the amazon.co.uk web services on my site one of these days ...

Boy, we are getting a bit off topic aren't we? Well, the B5 universe can't be all that dead if we are talking about buying merchandise and whatnot. ;)

As someone else said much earlier, Tolkein's "universe" is hardly dead, and look at how long that went without a new book. ;)

Is B5 "dead"? Depends on what you mean by dead. New episodes? Maybe not. (I hope so, but I don't hold my breath if you know what I mean. Especially now that he's gone to comic book writing. I have to assume that is a hell of a lot easier than fighting every damned season to keep your show on the air, year after year, and writing most episodes and doing everything else that JMS did to make B5 as fantastic as it was.)

But if you mean dead as in "burried and forgotten" NO WAY! :D

We're proof of that. :)

I certainly don`t think the B5 universe is dying.
I play the excellent B5CCG every week and former Magic and LotR-CCG players that I play with have been interested in seeing episodes.
All of them have now seen all films and episodes, some several times, and and they are now reading the comics and books as well, and have even started buying B5-related stuff on eBay.
I`m certain that as long as there is a demand new stuff will come along, before to long I hope.

But a horrible thought just occurred to me...

As we all know, JMS is off on other projects. He was so much of why B5 was great, so here's the horror: what if the demand for new stuff becomes strong enough that somebody picks it up, but JMS doesn't contribute? Oh, he might sign off, but he might be tired of working nonstop on it.

In other words, what if we get exactly what we want -- something new -- and it turns out to be pretty bad?

[*]New B5 Universe Movies (of any kind), No.
[*]New B5 Universe Short Stories or the Anthology, No.
[*]New B5 Universe Novels, No.
[*]New B5 Universe Comics, No.
[*]Into the Fire B5 video game, No.

[*]DVD Box Sets of the existing episodes, Yes.
[*]Reprints of the original nine novels, Yes, they are dribbling out, though why they DelRey is doing 1-6 & 8 and not the Short Story Anthology, is beyond me.
[*]New CCG game, evidently Yes.
[*]B5 Quote Book, Yes (but that's not new fiction).
[/list]

I agree with Nancy. B5 is JMS's baby, and I don't think he'd take too kindly to someone else messing with it, unless he was involved in some way.

[*]DVD Box Sets of the existing episodes, Yes.

But, also keep in mind that the Star Trek movies were made over a decade after the show had gone off the air, largely because Paramount recieved proof that a large enough fan base existed for the purpose of producing a new series.

Since the DVD sales have "surprised" and "pleased" executives at WarnerBrothers, I think it's fair to say the the releasing of the DVD box sets, and the response by the general public to purchase them, prove that the show is still out there and alive.

Don't forget about conventions. I'm hoping to make it to DragonCon in Atlanta in August, which has me pretty excited. The current guest list includes Walter Koenig, Bill Mumy, Bruce Boxleitner and Brad Dourif [who made "Passing Through Gethsemane" one of my favourite eps]. It's still over four months away, so there are likely to be others. Of course, most of these actors [and those listed below] have other efforts to promote as well as B5, but the B5 fans are definitely a presence at cons :)

Last year's guests included Richard Biggs, David Allen Brooks, Julie Caitlin Brown, Jason Carter, Andreas Katsulas, Tracy Scoggins, Patricia Tallman, Andrea Thompson and Peter Woodward. Yes, I wish I could have been there :(

That is true. However, B5 is not Trek, and Warner Brothers is not Paramount. B5 has had two attempts at spinoffs that died very quickly, for reasons that had everything to do with the networks and studios (FAILURES on their part), and little to do with the writers and producers.

Warner Brothers is TIGHT (as in being tightwads) and they don't have 1/1,000,000,000th of the faith that Paramount has in Trek. Warner Brothers dispenses money on B5 with an eye dropper squeezed by a stingy accountant, whereas Paramount dispenses money on Trek with a 2-1/2" firehose. There is no comparison.

Right now, Paramount's faith in Trek is being tested. Ratings are down. Things are bad for sci-fi everywhere. This is the age in which "The Sci-Fi Channel" doesn't want to BE a Sci-Fi Channel. What makes anybody think that this is an environment in which Warner Brothers, a studio that has no outlet for a B5 Universe show, is likely to back any B5 Universe Show (spinoff) or movie in the future?

If you believe that Warner Brothers will come out with a B5 Universe Spinoff (Crusade, Rangers, or something new), or a B5 Universe TV movie or theatrical release, and that Warner Brothers will be able to find a network to air said spinoff, you have infinitely more faith in Warner Brothers than I do. Ditto for DelRey and any new fiction.

Brad Dourif also appeared in a two-parter of ST Voyager, called "Basics". The episode bridged seasons 2 and 3. Dourif played a Betazoid ensign. He is instrumental in saving the Voyager from the Kazon.

Just a little bit of info. ;)

Thanks, crofootski. I have not seen that episode, but he was also in an earlier ep called "Meld," which I did catch. I'm a fan of several things he's done, but when I get his autograph [*fingers crossed*!], it'll be on some B5 paraphernalia :)
