I have heard that handwritten in blue ink is best, but then you can't use your computer to speed things up a bit. So I address the envelope by hand, but send in a typed (and dated and signed) letter.

I compose the letter on the PC, print both the letter and the envelope (with USPS Delivery Point Barcode) on the Laserjet in a nice, easy to read font like Arial. Then, I sign the letter in blue ink.
That way, it ought to get where it's going, fast, be easy to read, and still have an obvious personal touch. I always sign on a semi-soft surface, so it's obvious that the sig. was not printed on with the PC printer.
