Well, it's called "graphic novel" to try and make it sound respectable and mature, because many still think "comic book" means kiddie-lit, with less value than porn, and certainlynot worthy of wide acceptance. Hence the pc relabeling.
JMS seems to like comics, and to prefer a more visual medium than novels, so it makes sense to me.
