Downloaded and watched the first ep. I don't want to spoil anything, but I have to say, I hope this is not the overall "feel" and style of the entire 13 eps. If it is, I can understand why Sci-Fi passed.
Let me put it this way...loved the new Doctor, loved Rose. Story was practically non-existant, character development was rushed, continuity was pretty-much ignored (which I thought he was going to be very true to from what he said), threads to making the Doctor feel like a newer version of an old character were passed over (when they should've been taken extreme advantage of), and lastly, and my biggest problem of all really...what's up the the Power Rangers moments?! Silly, childish, horrid sound FX and corny VFX and talking down to the audience (which the Dr. Who never did in the past).
The one thing Dr. Who always had going for it when it had no money for FX was great storytelling, wonderful writing and intriguing and fun characters.
The boyfriend character was stupid, the Nestene was not in line with continuity, but I did like Eccleston and Rose.
I will reserve full judgement until I've seen more eps. But for a premiere I was left badly wanting...and more than a bit concerned.

Dude, its a reboot. Continutiy takes a rain check. I also think the web leak was a pre production version, It certainly does not have the new theme music they are trailering in the UK, which is much meatier.
The boyfriend was supposed to be stupid. South London is full of people like that, i know, i live there!!!
Effects were cheesy on purpose, its Dr Who FCS. The Autions were supposed to look amusing, even the characters though so until they got shot in the head!!
He's aiming it a British Saturday evening tea time crowd, the same audience that the
If fanboys love it then great, if not, then it should start a new genreation of fans. Its written by a man who lives and breathes Who. I think its in good hands.
I laughed and smiled throughout. I got a real kick out of seeing aliens attacking where I live and work!
