As I said elsewhere, this is very common. The porn sites pounce on just about every semi-popular domain that lets it's registration run out.

Eventually somebody had to take it. That's what happens when a series gets canned. I'm still mad that the domain name for "My So-Called Life" was taken over by a plumbing company... and it lasted a heck of a lot longer.

No, the whole point is to redirect people who are looking for the original site to their own site, and thus increasing their ad revenue and/or getting new subscribers.

It works the other way. It's the B5Crusade.com part they pay Money for. The IP Address can actually Change if they move to a different service provider, but so long as they pay the fees, they get to keep the Human readable portion.

They may also be hoping to make a lot of Money by trying to sell the name to Warner, Babylonian Productions or the Skiffy Channel.

A few years back, a lot of money changed hands for domain names like this. People would buy the names and offer to sell them to corporations whose names matched up with the domains. Some corportaions paid Millions for their own names. It's called Cybersquatting.

Last I heard, the people who control domain names were trying to stop squatters by allowing legitimate companies to challenge the registrations. I'm not sure how far such efforts have gone. It helps keep the Lawyers in business, though.

Lawyers, I work for IP lawyers (well did) and cybersquatting was quite a lucrative business from what I could see.

Okay, joking aside: While technically people have a right to run pornsites, it's at best silly to take a URL like b5crusade.com, IMHO ridiculous and irresponsible.

Did they buy the IP address and didn't think to change the code? I was never very good with the nuances of domain encoding and such.

the domain can always be bought back from whichever porno site grabbed it... but the price is likely too high to be worth it, unless Warner Bros. itself wants it... and I doubt that's the case...

Anyway, that shows you the extent of my tech know-how. And possibly my naivete. I didn't want to rush to judgement as to who to blame. But swiping a URL just to mislead people...I find that unethical, regardless of the law.

Somewhat B5-ish in that respect, hm? (he said in a last-ditch effort to sound topical....)

Cybersquatting becomes trickier when the domain name is based on a trademark like "Star Wars" or "Babylon 5" rather than a generic, but identifiable name or on a name that is not also a registered trademark. So even though Warner Bros. let the domain name lapse, they might be able to get it back with they want to without paying the cybersquatters a penny. At least that seems to be the trend based on some recent articles I've seen.

A guy I know registered "starwarsdvd.com" a few years ago, not for the purpose of selling the name back to Lucas, but just so that he'd know when the damned discs were coming out, on the theory that Lucasfilm would try to register that domain name when the time came. In fact Lucasfilm started buying up every conceivable "Star Wars" domain name not long after my friend registerd the DVD variant, and he got a letter from the Lucasfilm lawyers in very short order. His own attorney advised him to give them back the name base on two notions: 1) "Star Wars" is a registered trademark and 2) Lucasfilm could afford to keep him in court for the next 20 years if it wanted to, even if it ultimately lost the case. If whoever has the "B5-crusade" name thinks they can keep it forever, or even make big bucks selling it back to WB, they're probably mistaken.
