I'm thinkin' pretty much the same thing here. I think that maybe he's repressed some aspects of his parents' relationship that he'd sooner forget. I'm sure he sees now that it's because of the tech, or because that brings it out in them. It would be an interesting thing to explore more in book 3.

If I am guessing correctly, his reactions to his fathers ring and his unwillingness to talk about his parents would be understandably justified.

That would probably be why mages staying together was so rare. It evens seems keeping a normal spouse around is unheard of. Not surprising given the origin of the tech and it's ability to allow mages to act out their frustrations.
