Unaired Scripts

I know that there were scripts for "Value Judgements", "To the Ends of the Earth", and "End of the Line". Was there ever a script for "Tried and True"? Are scripts for the normal Crusade episodes available?

Offensive, certainly. But, again, whether or not they were really "dumb" depends on what you're talking about.

I don't think there's any question that the suggested changes, if fully accepted, would've made Crusade fit in much better with the rest of TNT's schedule. And, after all, that was the point...

Forget Dumb. How about Offensive?

Like the one that would have Gideon set Dureena up to be Raped so he could have something to Blackmail "Mr. Jones" with.

The MBAs were clueless about what makes a good story.

Of course, they didn't CARE if the story was any good, so long as it had lots of sexual innuendo and violence.
And maybe even some nudity if they could figure out a way to get away with it.

I suspect some of them may now be working on Enterprise.

That Would explain the famous Vulkan KY-Jelly scene.

Yes. Exactly. I think you've got it... [wry]

Atlanta wanted tons and tons of exposition so the audience wouldn't get confused, while LA (after being told by Atlanta to get hands on) felt the show was to talky and slow and needed more action. This lef jms having to cut down on such silly little things as characterization and humour.

Also, Atlanta generally had little idea about the workings of TV production, often asking for things that simply weren't doable on the budget/shcedule Crusade had. For example, they decided they wanted live action footage of the riots on Earth in War Zone just days before shooting was to start. The result wasn't pretty.

(And Crusade's budget was around $920,000 per ep. - Not above one million.)

As I was watching Crusade yesterday, I began to notice again one of the things I really loved about Crusade, and that was the diversity of the characters. We had the captain (of course), an alien who is directly affected by the plague and is believed to be the last of her race, a technomage, a telepath serving in Earth Force, and a guy working for IPX. There is also Dr. Chambers of course (since they are trying to cure something) and then Lochley (providing a link to Babylon 5. Almost all of these characters were from organizations we had heard about on Babylon 5.

When I look at B5LR, I just see a bunch of Rangers, with no real diversity like I saw on Crusade. Now, I understand that each person on Crusade is diverse, as in different pasts, and different truths.

I honestly think that if B5LR get's a series, then we would not see Crusade return until about halfway through at least. This leaves a few possible problems:
1) getting the cast of Crusade back
2) and getting it done before they get to old (when you can tell there has been a few years between)

Honestly, I would rather see Crusade picked up, but the only way that may happen is for B5LR to get a series. I just hope B5LR is very very good, which I'm almost sure it will be, but I do have my doubts.

Natron, if you didn't have doubts then you'd be an "easy mark" in this world. We all worry and have doubts. No one (individual or team) can always pull off a masterpiece. And “Rangers” seems to have so much potential. All we can do is wait and see. I, too, am hoping that an inordinate amount of the audience won’t be too distracted by a game that might be airing at the same time. Or, if they are, they’ll catch Rangers on its second or third airing.

But we all know it will come down to the numbers on Day 1, probably. Personally, I’ll fire off a letter to Bonnie Hammer the next day. But I don’t get the feeling she’s the right person to talk to about a series potential. Sounds a bit like preaching to the choir, you know?

Does anyone know who at Sci-Fi might actually need some extra coercing? It’s too late for a really big letter-writing campaign, but a letter or two can’t hurt. (If they are mature in tone, that is! I don’t want to give the wrong impression here.)

Oh, Natron, one other point. I also loved the diversity of the characters on "Crusade" and hope they can come back some day. But I see "Rangers" as having a pretty good chance to pull off the same atmosphere. After all, this is not a choice ship, why think this is a choice crew? They were probably dumped together without much real thought about crew compatibility, etc. At least for Dylan, this mission is a kind of punishment, I think.

Well, for starters you have members of at least four different races on the small Rangers crew. That's bound to create diversity - I mean, if humans have problems following the Minbari traditions and rules of conduct, what's a Drazi or a fiery Narn to do?

So I think it has great potential as far as the crew is concerned, even if they are all Rangers, working for a common goal.

Quite so. We may have a diversity of backgrounds on Crusade, but in the main the characters are humans.

Another aspect of this was touched on in B5, with both Marcus and Lennier. Individuals become Rangers for different reasons, and not always good, or right, ones.

At this point we have no idea why any of these characters chose to become Rangers ... but, with JMS' track record, I am willing to bet that there plenty of meat there for some good character based stories.
