Yes, TNT's desire to differentiate the two shows dates back to the earliest discussions, when JMS was still dealing mostly with B5 fans who worked at the network's Los Angeles office. And it is by no means something he totally disagreed with. He replaced Christopher Franke as composer and John Flinn as director of photography precisely to give the new show its own sound and look. Later TNT went completely nuts with the idea, but it wasn't a whole new attitude, just a grotesque exaggeration of an existing one.
And the show was announced under three different titles, at various times:
The Babylon Project: Crusade
Crusade: The Babylon Project
and, finally,
Crusade
