Which actor/actress did the best job of..

In "Babylon Squared" Zathrus is a very intelligent telepathic aide-de-camp (officer) pretending to be a dumb private. He is telling the humans predetermined information whilst making them think that they tricked the information out of him. This would come across as weird. He also has a very depressed character.

I always though Zathras to be highly intelligent, kind of like the stereotype of a rocket scientist... absolutely brilliant, but no social skills whatsoever!

It is difficult to seperate acting ability and the actual character . For me there is two kind of actors , Character Actors and "Real Actors" i think you get Character actors in soaps , Sci-Fi etc . Would Micheal O ` Hare be any good in a Film [not sci-fi] ? Or Bruce Boxleitner in a period drama for instance ... Some Actors may find it difficult to switch genres like being typecast. We all know the most famous actors refuse to be in Star trek because that is "career suicide" for them . Although Scott Bakula has done it ... And not only that but what do you think that makes a good actor

Would you consider "Gods and Generals," the new Civil War film, to be a period drama? Because I think Boxleitner's in that.

Yeah, I love Tim Choate as Zathras!

Not surprising. Bruce Boxleitner's first major role was in the mini-series, "How the West was won" and followed this with a number parts in westerns and movies set in Civil War, post-Civil War period.

And from what I gather from replies to this thread, it looks like almost everyone thinks he did an acceptable job of portraying John Sheridan but others did a better job of making their characters stand out.

Being a Sheridan fan, I think Boxleiter did an excellent job as Sheridan. I might not have liked that character if Bruce hadn't played him.

I think it would have been interesting had JMS gotten Christopher Walken to play the part of Sheridan. I think he would have given the character a little more oomph.

I'm a Sheridan fan also but what I think happened is Boxleitner developed, and played, the role so well he became an accepted part of the everyday landscape so guest stars stood out in their roles in various episodes. Think the same thing happened to Claudia Christian and the other regulars.

If I know the actor you are referring to, he actually kind of scares some people. I have trouble remembering any part I've seen of his (although I recognize him so I know I've seen him in many roles).

Did he ever play in a Saturday Night Live skit called "The Continental"? I think this is the same actor. I laugh until it hurts when I see that skit. I think he's the same actor.

But in movie rolls, he tends to get type-cast as a villian, doesn't he?

I may have the wrong actor in mind.

Sinclair knows, from his trivia thread, that I'm not good at the name game.

Sinclair, it looks like him. I need to get to sleep soon, so I won't search more for him. I think he was the "Continental". His mustache kept falling off. But it was also was a very hilarious skit.

Great fun. But I wonder if he ever feels type-cast.

Hypatia,

That is him. I love those skits too! There have been a few skits that he has done as "The Continental" (they just did a new one this Saturday). I went to a halloween party last year at this bar in Chicago dressed up as "The Continental." I had my champanga glass and used cheesy lines all night. It was a blast.

If you want to see Christopher Walken in more of a comic light, be scared, and have a huge laugh, check out the music video for Fatboy Slim's "Weapon of Choice." It features Christopher Walken disco dancing!

Does not compute!

How hard is it to play a character like John Sheridan for an actor ??? (Not that i am saying he is a bad actor) I suspect it would be easier than to play Sinclair who had a deeper physche so to speak

Its easier to play a gung-ho military leader than a complicated religious man for instance , But that may just be me and my warped mind

Thanks for the tip. I don't tend to catch Saturday Night Live, I admit.

But I did catch that skit and it is hilarious.

I had not idea there were others. The one where the woman who is never shown (other than her hand and glove) is there to get her missing glove back.

I laughed until I hurt, I found it very hilarious.

Ah, fah! Off for my night lecture.

I'll probably think of "the continental" the whole drive down.

There are 3 i think. All of them you never see the woman. Thats because the CAMERA is supposed to be the woman's POV. The one where he has the big telescope pointed down at her apt is a riot. I think thats the one where he spills champanga on her blouse, and tells her to go to the bathroom to wash it out. She goes in there, and you see him light up a cigarette behind the bathroom mirror --- which is a 2 way mirror like an interrorgation room. Then she takes off for the door. Classic.
