It's an online ranking for a video game. I used to be number 2 on the list, but have since been pushed down to number 6

Oh well, I'll be back up in no time

Has anyone else made little plugs for B5 here and there throughout the internet?

Uh, you misunderstand. In the game you can play to get a high score. Then, you get a password, enter it online, and see where you stand compared to other people.

As of now, my score puts me in sixth place. In the space next to a player's name, he or she can write a comment. My comment is, "Babylon 5 Season 2 DVD 4/29!"

Sorry for any confusion

Time to write to the DVD reviewers so they will at least sample an episode. Reviews occur in UK newspapers, TV and magazines.

Inform them that the Season 1 was a surprise sell out, at least to Warner Brothers - they thought it was too grownup to sell. It needs more viewer intelligence that most TV and is full of references to literature.

Suggested episodes, for a first time viewer, to see:
Romance?
Adventure?
Politics?
Tragedy?

Suggested S2 episodes for a first time viewer? That's always tough since the best ones are usually the main plot episodes - viewing these on their own could ruin the overall enjoyment

But, if I had to pick a few for a reviewer to watch then it would have to be:

Minor/Non Arc episodes:
Confessions and Lamentations
Comes the Inquisitor

Major Arc episodes:
The Coming of Shadows (winner of the Hugo award)
In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum
The Long, Twilight Struggle

Of course, watching these without the rest, you would lose the buildup and the impact which is one of the things that makes B5 so special

This is a copy of the letter I sent to the UK Sunday Times.

Please forward a print out of this email to Patricia Nicol who reviews DVDs
in the Culture section.

Dear Patricia Nicol,
Please review the Season 2 Babylon 5 DVD set
that is due out in the middle of May.

I am a fan of the Channel 4 TV series and it tends to get ignored by
reviewers.

Over 5 years the series tells the life history of a space station called
Babylon 5. An arc of this length had the effect of making the story too
high brow for most of the population. Season 2 tells the story of "The
Coming of Shadows" - the arrival of the villains. One of the unusual
features of this Sci-Fi series is that there is a romance between two of the
characters Captain Sheridan and the alien Delenn.

If you do not have time to watch all the episodes, you may like one of the
following:
"The Geometry of Shadows" - aliens doing alien things.
"Soul Mates" - and you thought that you had marital problems.
"In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum" - a wow episode; meet the enemy.
"Confessions and Lamentations" - distressing. A weepy.
"The Long, Twilight Struggle" - war story.
"Revelations" - demonstrates lots of evil in action.

Why aren't these getting television commercials? If the sales went through the roof without them, then with commercials they should skyrocket!!!

Rommie

Why aren't these getting television commercials?
I would imagine that there are no commercials because the fans most likely to buy are also likely to know the release date before WB announces it. ;)

The powers that be probably realize that B5 fandom is pretty aware of these things. Commercials would not expand awareness to likely buyers (and therefore wouldn't boost sales that much).

Probably best to save the money, increase the profitability, and ensure that the remaining seasons are fiscally justified rather than "preach to the converted."

You don't typically see commercials for TV-related DVD sets outside the context of the programme itself. I believe the only ones I've seen advertised are the South Park and Star Trek ones. More often, they're advertised to the masses in magazines like TV Guide or Entertainment Weekly.
