No B5 for us Israelis :(

Israelis might wanna read this one -

I've just Emailed Channel 3 (AGAIN) 'bout buying B5's old episodes, so people will get familiar with the show before LOTR gets here.

Their resposne was that they do not plan to buy the old episodes or the new movie at this time.

BLAH.
This sux.

I suspect that Warner Bros. isn't selling either the new movie or the old series into any secondary markets at the moment. They're probably waiting for the ratings from the U.S. premier and the Sci-Fi Channel's final decision on going to series with Rangers. If that happens both the reruns and the Rangers pilot will be more valuable, especially to stations that plan to carry the Rangers series. Nothing personal. It's just business.

Non-US (or non-US-SciFi) markets, I'd imagine.

The primary market is always the first-run network that is paying the lion's share of the production cost. For E.R. this is NBC in the U.S., for B5 it was the PTEN Consortium for the first four years, TNT for year five.

Colloquially non-U.S. markets are also "secondary" because the economics of the business puts heavy emphasis on turning a profit based on domestic sales. Whatever you make overseas is gravy. This is a U.S. studio we're talking about, after all. So "primary" and "secondary" are defined from their point of view. For a British producer the U.K. would presumably be the primary market, while Europe and the U.S. were secondary markets.

Actually, isn't business done basically the same way in other countries, too? There is a market that basically starts out locally, then spreads through various means (foreign markets, pay-cable, video, etc, etc.)

I have wished over and over again that I could get some great foreign programs. But to get satellite, I would lose all “local” news, and that I don’t want to do. (I hope someday satellite can get the same right as cable to broadcast local news and local channels.)

But I thought that it was pretty much the same all over the world, just that horrible “business” kicking in. Is there much of a difference with programming in other countries? I honestly don’t know.

I didn't need to post my message, Joe. Thanks for the insight, by the way. As always, you cut to the chase very effectively.

Hope your new job is going well, not going too bad, or not driving you crazy, in descending order of hope-factor. :S

Within the US they not only Do have that right, I believe they are now Obligated to provide some sort of local coverage.

I have DirecTV. They provide the 4 or 5 "top" local channels in my neighborhood.
For an extra $6 or thereabouts.

I didn't bother. I can get those same channels and 5 or 6 smaller ones they Don't carry for free off an indoor antenna.
Not as clear a picture, but the local programs I most Want aren't part of the package anyway.

Unless you live in an area with very poor reception, you should Always be able to get "local" channels for free this way.

That's why Cable companies always carried them.
It was something their subscribers could get Free anyway.
And if people were forced to switch back and forth, they might notice they weren't watching much on the Pay channels and cancel the service.

I wish it were not so hard to get other sci-fi here. Other shows, period. American tv has kind of fallen into a rut, it seems. As someone else said, all lawyers, cops, doctors. Nothing is ever new or original.

Bakana, unfortunatley there is no tv reception here, and very very little radio reception. It's the mountains around here.

Hypatia, if DirecTV is a possibility from where you live, it might still be an option.

I'm assuming you are somewhere in the US.
wink.gif

Do you have a clear line of sight to a satellite orbiting almost due South of New Orleans??
That is where the books that came with my system put the satellite.

If so, you could call them and request the cost of service and if they carry the local channels you need.
If you get lucky, you can probably beat your cable company's price.
cool.gif
laugh.gif

I'm only paying $21 a month for basic service.
(They don't advertise this option, you have to ask. They try to get you to include at least One of the premium services every time.)
Local cable here is at least $10 more for the same service.

Add 5 or 6 more bucks for the local stuff.

Or as many of the Premium packages as you want.
wink.gif

Wow. Yes, I do live in the USA, very close to the Mexican border. That IS cheaper than my cable service. And you still get the Sci-Fi channel, I'm assuming!

I just could not do without my local news. I just have to hear the weatherman say "it's going to be hotter than h*** today, like it always is, why do you even tune in anymore?..."

Just joking, of course. It's more like "there may be a tiny chance of rain today, but it will probably be verga and evaporate before it reaches the ground".

Anyhow, I might just check that out. I copied and will save your post. It would be nice to reduce my cable bill. It's up to something like $38 now. A month. EEK!

Bakana, who would I check with to find out if I have the direct line of site needed? Sorry, was that a joke? I'm not in a cave-house if that's what you mean.

Although, there IS a cave-house near the area. It's very luxurious. Maybe they'd know!

quote:
to find out if I have the direct line of sight needed?

Well, the way I did it was to look at a map and determine the compass bearing (more or less) of the spot directly over the equator due south of Texas, then go outside with a compass.
(I know posted it as south of New Orleans earlier, but I just dug out the installation book and it's Texas. Roughly 100 degrees Longitude.)
I Looked in that direction, and checked the up angle (in Florida, about 48 Degrees) to see if there was anything between Me and the Sky. There isn't, so I was in business.

The book places the angles as roughly 30 degrees in the Northern states to as much as 60 degrees in the South.

One of the nice things about the box I have is that this info is built in.
Go to a store that has one on display and bring up the Dish Pointing Menu.
With mine, you enter your Zip Code and it tells you the compass bearing and elevation angle.

When you get everything hooked up during the installation, and have the dish pointing in roughly the correct direction, all you need to do is have a TV where you can see it (through a window or bring it outside).
You use the box's remote to go to Signal Meter on the Menu and it will tell you on the TV screen how strong a signal you have.
This allows you to move the dish around until you get the strongest signal.
At that point, you are perfectly lined up and you tighten down the adjustment bolts and go back in the house to enjoy a movie or something.

Installation is simple enough to do yourself if you feel capable of bolting the dish to the side of the house and running the cables inside yourself.
It took me about two hours. Drilling the holes, pulling the cable in, etc.

If not, I understand most installers charge less than $100.
Which tells you right away that it doesn't take long.
