"...The DVR numbers are a marker and it is a factor. We did see an uptick in ratings. We [went from a]1.5 to a 2 in the DVR plus 7 numbers. That was a pattern we liked."
Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly said Monday that certain programs with low ratings under Nielsen Media Research's traditional measurement can be renewed if they have strong numbers among viewers who watch those shows on their digital video recorders. One Fox show that returns this fall, the Joss Whedon drama "Dollhouse," fit this pattern, Reilly said during a conference call with reporters. "The DVR numbers are a marker that audiences want to watch something," he explained, adding that "Dollhouse" got progressively better DVR ratings each week.
You pitched season two as being more like the last few episodes of the season, can you talk about that?
The last few episodes we got to play "the man behind the curtain" a lot. We did less of, “And this week, she’s a neurosurgeon!” Which we’ll still do to an extent, it’s part of the fun. But we got into what makes the place tick, what makes it wrong. It was less, “Murder She Was Imprinted to Write.” The episodes were more satisfying and the network responded to that. And we also responded to their ideas about pacing and it being more of a thriller and a conspiracy so they were seeing what they were hoping for when we got the aspect we were looking for.
And given the flash forward of the 13th episode, how will that influence on how second season picks up?
My feeling is we will be paying that off around the – the flash-forward in the 13th episode took place long after where we are right now. So we can be moving toward some of those events which are unexplained. We have a few years where we can do anything we want before it would be weird if we didn’t start paying them off.
However, the dolls have different personalities each week so we couldn't get to know them.
and Tehmoh Penikett isn't a good actor IMO.
That is a good point. But my point was that having them sitting round a table just chatting away wouldn't interest me in the same way that Firefly or Buffy characters would've.However, the dolls have different personalities each week so we couldn't get to know them.
On the contrary, the true, original persona of the "dolls" is constantly showing hints of itself, and trying to break through. That is a major plot element of the show. We are being challenged to get to know them...
Oh, I think this show -- if it's allowed to live a little longer -- will prove to be Joss's most audacious product yet.
I have a feeling this is yet another example of "Joss needs a season to warm up."
and Tehmoh Penikett isn't a good actor IMO.
Dude. You may have committed B5TV heresey there

Yes indeed! BSG fans: Jamie Bamber (Lee) and Michael Hogan (Tigh) are both scheduled for guest appearances. And Summer Glau is apparently going to be a recurring character, because Joss just can't get enough of her...
Season 2 starts in a couple of weeks, Sept 25, I believe
